What is RTE Gujarat?

RTE Gujarat is the state-level implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 β€” a law passed by the Indian Parliament that makes free education a fundamental right for every child aged 6 to 14 years.

Under Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act, every private unaided primary school in Gujarat must reserve 25% of Class 1 seats for children from economically weaker sections (EWS) and disadvantaged groups β€” giving children from low-income families, SC/ST communities, and marginalized backgrounds free access to quality private education from Class 1 through Class 8.

Gujarat began implementing RTE in 2013 with just 432 admissions. Over 12 years, the scheme has grown massively β€” with 2,38,916 applications received and 95,511 seats allocated in the 2025-26 cycle alone, across 9,741 private schools. The Gujarat Directorate of Primary Education manages the entire admission process online through rte.orpgujarat.com.

For the 2026-27 academic year, the application window is open from April 4 to April 17, 2026. Children who attended government Anganwadis receive Category 8 priority in the computerized lottery. Parents can apply through any of the 4 official servers for faster access.
